It’s looking like the mid-term elections this coming November could be a disaster for the Democrats. Tea Party activists have made “Remember in November” the battle cry for the upcoming elections and are backing political and economic conservative candidates to turn the tide of big government socialism that’s been brought on during the Obama era.

Many people are suspecting that Obama and the Democrats have something up their sleeves in order to stay in power, an “October surprise” that will hurt America. Pamela Geller speculated on the suspected “October surprise” in American Thinker:

The October Surprise. We all know it’s coming. In what shape, idea, form — who’s to say? Evil always surprises. Its goals are constant, the ultimate objective never changes, but inevitably it manifests itself as the savior of the day, the savior of man. The 2008 Democrat October Surprise that ushered in the first hardcore radical post-American president in American history was the “economic collapse.” Oh yes, that was a beaut.

The time before that, the moochers and the looters tried to fake Bush documents — except that the conservative blogosphere caught them red-handed, so they missed their mark.

But the party of haters, infiltrators, anti-capitalists, the party that is anti-freedom and anti-individual rights, is going to have to pull off something really catastrophic to stay in power this November. And they will, because it is abundantly clear now that they despise the premise of America and they mean to replace it with statism, the source of untold, incomprehensible human misery for centuries.

Pamela Geller’s description of our opposition is on the money. If you want to experience the attitudes of the “progressives” first-hand, mosey on over to the Democrat and Chronicle Opinion page and participate in some of the discussions on the editorials there. I’ve participated on and off for almost 5 years now and I’m still amazed at the number of anti-American, anti free enterprise, big government statists that post there and their justifications for stealing the wealth of others to give to the entitlement class (aka socialist wealth redistribution). They are the first to get nasty and personally attack conservatives and it happens on a regular basis and the D&C will allow the perpetrators to keep on posting while they arbitrarily ban conservative posters for their ideals. This is what we’re up against folks, a stacked deck where the rules favor the radicals

Pamela Geller writes:

We have a long and terrible fight in front of us. The fight is as big as the idea, the foundation, the being of this great nation, the fight for America. Yes, it’s as big as all that, and the enemy is ruthless, unscrupulous, and evil — and willing to do whatever it takes to assume absolute control. They build nothing, produce nothing, create nothing, invent nothing. They steal. They demand. They demoralize. They are destroyers.

What will October’s Surprise be? Political analyst Jack Wheeler has an idea. “A Second Great Depression,” he says, “is the Democrat Party’s path to power”:

Our country is faced with an impending economic catastrophe, a Second Great Depression. It is being brought about on purpose by a political party that cares only for keeping and expanding its power, and looks upon prosperity as a threat to that power.

There’s been a lot of speculation that we may be on the verge of another Great Depression. So far, Obama and the Democrats have been implementing the Cloward-Piven Strategy to a “T”. Don’t be surprised if this all comes down this coming October.

Federal Reserve officials said on Wednesday that high unemployment was likely to stay with us for years to come. From cnbc.com:

U.S. unemployment is likely to stay high for a long time, two Federal Reserve officials said Wednesday, suggesting the U.S. central bank is in no rush to raise its ultra-low interest-rate policy.

The dovish comments, from Chicago Federal Reserve President Charles Evans and Federal Reserve Governor Elizabeth Duke, came two days before a government report expected to show that U.S. non-farm payrolls fell in June.

If that occurs, June will mark the first decline in monthly non-farm payrolls this year.

Meanwhile, unemployment is at 9.7 percent, “and it’s going to be a number of years before it’s going to get down to any type of rate that we might almost say is acceptable,” Evans said in an interview with CNBC Wednesday.

This comes two days after Obama and Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, announced that the economy is in recovery.

Yesterday, payroll processor ADP released their report. From hotair.com (hat tip to HowardRoarke):

Payrolls processor ADP said Wednesday that hiring by private companies climbed slightly in June, with a paltry 13,000 jobs added during the month, compared with a revised gain of 57,000 jobs in May.

The amount was lower than expected. A survey of economists surveyed by Reuters for the ADP EmployerServices report, jointly developed with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, was for a rise of 60,000 private-sector jobs in June.

Keynesian economics at work, but Paul Krugman believes we haven’t spent enough. (Hat Tip to phantomlord)

Obama, along with Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke, announced yesterday that the economy is in recovery, regardless of the data, employment figures and how the stock market is performing. From Yahoo News:

President Barack Obama, with Federal Reserve chairman Ben Bernanke at his side, insisted the US economy was “strengthening” Tuesday despite foreboding data and a fresh stock market slump.

Obama admitted there was “great concern” about the recovery, amid increasing anxiety over indicators which may point to a slowing of the rebound, and with expectations low for the latest unemployment figures due out Friday.

“The economy is strengthening, we are into recovery,” Obama said, shortly after new figures showed that consumer confidence, a key economic indicator, had tumbled in June, sending stock markets worldwide plummeting.

Does he think if he keeps on repeating the lie, that we will start believing it?

The stock market dropped over 200 points yesterday and is now below 10,000. Unemployment is hovering at around 10%, despite Obama’s promise that the Porkulus Package would bring it down to less that 8%. The article then goes on to report the pesky data that Obama and his enabler, Bernanke, want to brush aside:

Last month, in figures that fell well short of expectations, the Department said 431,000 posts were created in May, most of them temporary government jobs for this year’s census.

Private-sector jobs rose by just 41,000, less than a fifth of the amount predicted by analysts. Much of that gain came from temporary service-sector jobs. The employment rate stood at 9.7 percent.

Obama is starting to sound like Bagdad Bob!

Even though human induced (anthropogenic) global warming has been exposed as a hoax, the Obama administration will not give up on instituting legislation to tax Americans for it. This from Ben Lieberman of the NY Post

President Obama has a solution to the Gulf oil spill: $7-a-gallon gas.

That’s a Harvard University study’s estimate of the per-gallon price of the president’s global-warming agenda. And Obama made clear this week that this agenda is a part of his plan for addressing the Gulf mess.

So what does global-warming legislation have to do with the oil spill?

Good question, because such measures wouldn’t do a thing to clean up the oil or fix the problems that led to the leak.

The answer can be found in Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s now-famous words, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste — and what I mean by that is it’s an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.”

Even though Cap and Tax was withering on the vine in Congress, especially after Climategate broke, the Obama administration is continuing to push legislation that will cost every American dearly. In his speech on the Gulf oil spill, Obama said:

“We can’t afford not to change how we produce and use energy, because the long-term costs to our economy, our national security and our environment are far greater,”

Even a liberal such as Sen. Diane Feinstein had this to say:

“the climate bill isn’t going to stop the oil leak.”

Obama is persistent in pushing his global warming agenda and is using the BP Oil spill in the Gulf to push it. We can only hope that both sides of the aisle will see the folly of passing Cap and Tax as it will absolutely ruin our economy and hurt Americans, across the board!

Bloomberg reported some disturbing news recently on the state of US debt:

President Barack Obama is poised to increase the U.S. debt to a level that exceeds the value of the nation’s annual economic output, a step toward what Bill Gross called a “debt super cycle.”

The CHART OF THE DAY tracks U.S. gross domestic product and the government’s total debt, which rose past $13 trillion for the first time this month. The amount owed will surpass GDP in 2012, based on forecasts by the International Monetary Fund. The lower panel shows U.S. annual GDP growth as tracked by the IMF, which projects the world’s largest economy to expand at a slower pace than the 3.2 percent average during the past five decades.

We here at rochesterconserative.com have been warning that you can’t spend yourself out of a recession, it only makes matters worse. Keynesian economics don’t work. Look at what happened during the Great Depression. FDR’s spending lengthened the Depression years beyond what it should have been.

A while back, I posted an article, “What’s Happening in Greece Could Happen in the US”. Unfortunately, I need to rescind the title to read, “What’s Happening in Greece Will Happen in the US”.

There’s been a lot of hoopla lately about Arizona’s measures to reign in their problems with illegal immigration. How do Americans on the whole feel about illegal immigration and border issues? A recent Gallup Poll asked those questions . From CNS News:

A USA Today/Gallup poll conducted May 1-2 shows that 9 out of 10 Americans say it is moderately to extremely important to them for the federal government to take steps this year to secure the border against illegal immigration.

Similarly, 61 percent of Americans say they are very concerned that illegal immigrants are putting an unfair burden on U.S. schools, hospitals, and government services.

Gallup asked respondents whether it was extremely important, very important, moderately important, or not that important to them that the U.S. government take steps this year to control the border to stop the flow of illegal immigrants into the country. Only 10 percent said it was not that important. Eighty-nine percent said it was moderately to extremely important, with 42 percent saying it was extremely important, 26 percent saying it was very important, and 21 percent saying it was moderately important.

Gallup also asked respondents whether it was extremely important, very important, moderately important, or not that important to them that the U.S. government develop a plan to deal with the large number of illegal immigrants who are already living in the United States. Only 10 percent said this was not that important. Ninety percent said it was moderately to extremely important, with 36 percent saying it was extremely important, 31 percent saying it was very important, and 23 percent saying it was moderately important.

According to the Gallup Poll, an overwhelming majority of Americans feel that it’s moderately to extremely important that the federal government to take steps this year to secure the border against illegal immigration. So why is there all the controversy over what Arizona is doing? The newly enacted Arizona law mirrors federal law and the Gallup Poll shows that 9 out of 10 Americans want the federal government to do their job in securing the border.

Earlier this week, I reported on the radicalism that’s been displayed at immigration “reform” rallies. There’s been a clear anti-American sentiment displayed at these rallies. At the Atlanta rally, communist literature was passed out to the crowd. A riot broke out at the rally in downtown Santa Cruz, CA.

It’s also no coincidence that the immigration “reform” rallies were held on May Day, International Workers’ Day, a traditional communist/socialist holiday. The organizations that are behind these rallies are communist and socialist and their goals are to tear down the American way of life. The Gallup Poll shows that Americans don’t want open borders and they want federal immigration laws enforced and the illegal immigrant situation dealt with. Arizona is only doing what the federal government should be doing.

Don’t buy into the leftist propaganda that what Arizona is doing is wrong and is un-Constitutional. Rather, examine the groups that are calling for the boycotts of Arizona and organizing the rallies and you’ll find that many are communist, socialist and anti-America. They stand in stark contrast to the overwhelming majority of Americans who want our borders secured and the illegal immigration situation dealt with.

Lorrie Goldstein wrote an informative article in the Toronto Star, “The ‘truthiness’ of those GM ads”. She starts her article explaining the origins of the word “truthiness”:

Political pundits owe a huge debt of gratitude to comedian Stephen Colbert for coining the word “truthiness” on The Colbert Report in 2005.

Because “truthiness,” defined by the American Dialect Society as “the quality of preferring concepts or facts one wishes to be true, rather than the concepts or facts known to be true” describes so much of the blather fed to us these days by politicians, business leaders and the media.

Goldstein then goes on to connect “truthiness” to the GM TV ads that have been airing as of late:

Take those television commercials by General Motors Chairman and CEO Ed Whitacre boasting GM has “repaid our government loans, in full, with interest — five years ahead of the original schedule”.

Ditto his simultaneous April 21 op-ed piece in The Wall Street Journal, headlined “The GM Bailout: Paid Back in Full — The investment of U.S. and Canadian tax dollars worked.”

That’s pure “truthiness,” as was the subsequent crowing by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty this vindicated their decision to give GM billions of our tax dollars to bail out the company in late 2008, at the height of the global recession.

To be fair, “truthiness” isn’t lying. Technically, what Whitacre said is true, combined with a huge dose of what he hopes will be true. It’s just not the whole truth, as explained by Forbes.com columnist Shikha Dalmia, a senior policy analyst with the Reason Foundation.

What GM has actually repaid is only a small portion of the taxpayer bailout Harper and McGuinty engineered, along with U.S. President Barack Obama — a $6.7 billion loan from American taxpayers and $1.4 billion from us. (This at low interest rates GM couldn’t have obtained anywhere else, as the company was virtually worthless at the time.)

But most of the taxpayer-funded aid the U.S., Canada and Ontario gave to GM wasn’t through loans, but by purchasing an equity stake in GM. American taxpayers bought 60.8% of the company for about $43 billion, while we bought 11.7% for $8.1 billion.

I’ve seen that TV ad and my BS meter goes off every time I see it. I knew that GM CEO Ed Whitacre wasn’t being totally forthcoming and he comes off like his company is totally out of hock and the truth is, they aren’t.

I have to wonder if the Obama Administration was behind this deceptive ad campaign. Just as they claim that the Porkulus Package is working and creating jobs, when in reality, it did not stimulate the economy nor did it create jobs.

Remember this axiom, governments do not create wealth, they take wealth!

We’ll be hearing a lot of spin coming out of the White House as well as from those who are “owned” by the Obama Administration, as they attempt to justify their massive expansion of government and debt. Keep in mind the “truthiness” of the spin as well as who’s delivering the spin and their motivations for doing so and keep your BS meter handy!

The Dodd Finance Bill failed to move forward in a test vote last evening. From Michael R. Crittenden and Victoria McGrane of the Wall Street Journal Online:

U.S. Senate Republicans stood together Monday to successfully block lawmakers from moving ahead with sweeping legislation to overhaul U.S. financial markets, a temporary stumble for the Obama administration’s top domestic policy priority.

The Senate voted 57-41 on a procedural measure allowing lawmakers to move toward debate on financial regulatory overhaul legislation, falling short of the 60 votes needed. All GOP senators present voted against invoking cloture, joined by at least one Democrat, Sen. Ben Nelson (D., Neb.).

The partisan vote underscores the high political stakes surrounding the legislation, which would subject the nation’s financial institutions to new consumer and capital rules, boost regulation of derivatives and allow the government to respond more aggressively to crises in the financial system. If enacted, it would represent the most sweeping changes to regulation of financial markets since the Great Depression.

This doesn’t mean the bill is dead, but it is a show of solidarity amongst Republicans, and not all Democrats are for it either, as Sen. Ben Nelson (D., Neb.) also voted against the bill moving forward for debate.

The Dodd Finance Bill is something that America doesn’t need. From YID With LID:

Both the house and senate versions of the bill allow additional funds to be drawn from Treasury, authorize the FDIC to guarantee corporate debt, and authorize the FDIC and Fed to make creditors of failed firms whole. In other words, authorize bailouts. Additionally they create new bureaucracies, one of them which will allow the federal government to record each and every financial transaction you make (more on that tomorrow). Most importantly, the bill doesn’t help to create jobs. In fact, it will probably kill jobs by limiting the credit options for small business owners.

These bailouts of failed businesses, with the government picking who succeeds and who fails is corporate cronyism and borders on corporatism. In case you don’t know what corporatism is, here’s the definition, courtesy of the Merriam Webster Dictionary:

cor·po·rat·ism – the organization of a society into industrial and professional corporations serving as organs of political representation and exercising control over persons and activities within their jurisdiction

Do you know who instituted corporatism on a broad scale in their countries in the 20th Century? Both Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler instituted corporatism so that the state could control industry. Do we want a bill signed into law that will push America towards corporatism? Heck no!

The Senator who sponsored this bill, Christopher Dodd, Democrat from Connecticut and chairman of the Banking Committee received a sweetheart refinancing deal from Countrywide Bank, getting a better deal than what was available to ordinary borrowers. I find it quite ironic that the man who benefited from a financing deal that was better than ordinary Americans can get, would be sponsoring a bill that is supposed to reform the system. Can you say corporate cronyism?

Last Thursday (4/15/2010) we received a surprise visit at the Tax Day Rochester Tea Party from Ann Marie Buerkle who’s challenging Dan Maffei for the NY 25th Congressional seat. Ann Marie spoke as a private citizen and here’s the video from her speech:

Tea Partiers have their sights set on voting Dan Maffei out of office as he has voted for the Porkulus Package as well as the Health Care Reform (NOT!) Bill. A bunch of us protested in front of his office on March 20, 2010, the day before the House voted on the Health Care Reform (NOT!) Bill. We are also working with people in Syracuse, namely Lonely Conservative, to defeat Maffei as the NY 25th encompasses Syracuse as well as some eastern Monroe County suburbs.

So what do we know about Ann Marie Buerkle? Although she’s served on Syracuse’s Common Council, she’s not a professional politician. Her campaign website has the following:

A native of Auburn, New York, Ann Marie is a nurse and accomplished attorney working in healthcare, mother of six and grandmother of eleven.

After graduating as an R.N. from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing, Ann Marie worked at Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City and St. Joseph’s Hospital in Syracuse. While juggling a growing family, Ann Marie was a substitute school nurse for many years before obtaining her law degree from Syracuse University School of Law.

An Assistant New York State Attorney General since 1997, Ann Marie represents New York State with Upstate Medical University as her client, capping a professional life dedicated to improving the quality and affordability of our local health care system while expanding its patient-centered focus.

Committed to public service and community involvement, Ann Marie’s parents – both first generation Americans – instilled the value of hard work, individual responsibility, and personal integrity in her and her three brothers and sister. Her father worked for Met Life for over 63 years while simultaneously owning and operating Auburn’s Mohican Market. Ann Marie and her siblings spent their teenage years working at the store as well as at the popular roller skating rinks her parents owned and managed.

Ann Marie has a record of standing up for those in need. A former member of the Syracuse Common Council, she counsels abused women in crisis at Vera House shelter, provides volunteer legal services for needy Syracuse families through the Onondaga County Bar Association’s Pro Bono program, and is a lifelong advocate for those with special needs. Today she serves as a member of the Surrogate Decision-Making Committee for the New York State Commission on Quality of Care and Advocacy for Persons with Disabilities.

Of Ann Marie’s six grown children, only one remains in New York State due to better job opportunities elsewhere. As an owner of a small business for over twenty years, Ann Marie knows that high taxes, ever expanding government giveaways, and exorbitant energy costs are driving businesses and jobs from Upstate New York. As our congressman, Ann Marie will fight to change that.

Ann Marie Buerkle considers herself a fiscal conservative. Check out Lonely Conservative’s article of Ann Marie for a more in-depth report on her:

The Lonely Conservative: Ann Marie Buerkle – Could be the Real Deal for Conservatives

BTW, Maffei’s people have taken notice of Ann Marie Buerkle:

“I’m surprised the Republican Party insiders chose a candidate who is so far outside the mainstream,” McNally said in a statement. “They seem to want the most extreme, most conservative, most obstructionist candidate they could find.”

I woke up early yesterday (4/15/2010) morning with much excitement in anticipation of the 2010 Tax Day Rochester Tea Party! After I poured myself a cup of coffee, I turned on the TV and tuned it to WHAM TV-13. Mike Deming and Gabe Sukenik were going to be giving interviews. Evan Dawson interviewed Mike and Gabe and also gave reports from Genesee Crossroads Park, the location of the Tea Party. He was fair in his questions and reporting and we all certainly appreciate it!

A special thanks to Matt for taking and posting the videos on youtube and Freedom Fighter for taking the photos that I posted to this blog.

Jill Terreri from the Rochester Democrat and Chromicle interviewed the Tea Party Planning Group at our meeting a week ago and her report was published in the D&C:

Local Tea Partiers defy labels

It was a pretty fair article but her mention of racism was unwarranted and rubbed me the wrong way.

Unlike organized political parties, the loose affiliation of Tea Party activists can make the group unpredictable, and some of their rally signs can be controversial at best, racist at worst.

We’ve never had racism displayed at any of our Tea Parties, it’s a myth that’s perpetuated by the media and doesn’t reflect the reality of the situation and it’s time it was put to rest! Jill, I did not see you at the Tea Party yesterday, but if you were there, you would have witnessed that there was no racism. We told you at the meeting that we don’t tolerate racism or violence.

I left the house at 9am. My wife and our neighbor joined me this year. We encouraged people to invite their families and friends to the Tea Party so that they can experience them first hand. They are fun events, full of patriotism and they have a street fair atmosphere to them!

When we arrived at the park, Mike was already there with his son. Gabe, Linda, Guy and Rich were also there and Art and his son also showed. We all pitched in and helped haul the PA’s, tables, podium into the rally point in the park, at the “Y” of the Sister Cities Bridge. I noticed that the portapotties were already in place. Jon and his crew from “Mr. V’s” were also there with their food cart to provide lunch for the participants.

The forecast for the day called for temperatures in the high 60’s with a chance of scattered showers in the afternoon. It was kind of cloudy all morning and some folks mentioned that it rained a bit at their homes. While we were setting up, the clouds parted and dissipated and it warmed up real nicely. It felt more like San Diego rather than Rochester in April!

Bob called me to let me know that he arrived. Bob was bringing the generator. There were no working outlets at the park, so a generator was needed to power the PA’s. He brought his portable Honda that was rated at 2000 watts. It runs real quiet and we didn’t even notice it.

Helen, Valerie, Lisa, Paul and the rest of the We Surround Rochester folks showed up to help with the setup and they got the information tables set up for the organizations that were organizing and supporting the Tax Day Rochester Tea Party. Folks from We Surround Rochester, Campaign For Liberty, Young Americans For Liberty, RochesterWatch and RochesterConservative.com all pitched in with talent and treasure to make this years Tea Party a success! Many thanks to all who helped!

Once the PA’s were set up and tuned, Billy Joe and Dave from Billy Joe and the Blues Gypsies performed a great accoustic blues set that set a festive tone for this year’s Tea Party. Billy Joe’s daughter, Gypsy Rose, also joined in and sang for a few songs during the set and it was so cool and the crowd really loved it!

You can see Billy Joe and the Blues Gypsies play every Friday evening from 6pm-9pm at Six Pockets Bar, Grill and Billiards in the Ridge/Hudson Plaza at 716 East Ridge Rd., 266-1440. My wife and I are going to check out their “electrified” set!

Pretty much everyone in the crowd had smiles on their faces and there was much laughter and good vibes! We joked with each other on how there were so many angry red necks, the mantra that the MSM is trying to perpetuate and it’s just not true! You had to be there to experience what can only be described as a fun and inspiring event, full of patriotism and love of our country!

At 11:40am, I gathered the folks who volunteered for the Rochester Veterans and Patriots Color Guard and we crossed the bridge to prepare for the Presentation of the Colors. We met with our bagpiper, Scott and our bugler, Chris, and planned out what we were going to do. At High Noon, Chris played a bugle call, to get everyone’s attention and then played “To the Colors”, annnouncing the Presentation of the Colors.

We marched across the Sister Cities Bridge, towards the crowd and it was an exhilirating experience!

Next up was the Salute to Veterans, that I led. We dedicated that part of the program to Tea Party pioneer, Charlie Eames, who passed away back on November 1, 2009. Charlie spoke at all of the Rochester Tea Parties and has long been involved in promoting Liberty. Linda got a photo of Charlie, saluting during the National Anthem, and blew it up poster size. She held it up during my introduction and we presented it to Charlie’s wife, daughter and aunt.

Our bagpiper, Scott, then played a medley of the Service Anthems and I called out each branch and asked veterans who served in that branch to give a wave and the crowd to give them a big cheer.

What wonderful and genuine speakers we had at this year’s Tea Party! I was truly inspired and so was everyone else that attended. Nobody is putting words into our mouths! We are free thinkers and lovers of Liberty!

This post wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t post photos of the clever signs that people took the time to make. Thanks again to Freedom Fighter for your photos!
