Democrats vote to go home rather than debate an energy bill, Republicans address Congress in the dark

August 1st, 2008 · 6 Comments

The Politico is reporting that despite the GOP’s attempt to delay Congress’ summer recess, the Democrats voted to pack up and go home to campaign for the fall elections while refusing to hold a vote on energy policy. They don’t want to hold that vote, despite close to 85% of Americans favoring Congress allowing immediate drilling, because they don’t want to have to force Obama to vote against something that is extremely popular just before the election..

So, what did the GOP do? They GREW A SPINE and proceeded to continue their debate on the floor. Pelosi ordered the lights and microphones shut off and they continued to speak to their fellow GOP members and the regular citizens in the gallery above. Rep John Shadegg (R-AZ) began to fiddle with the public address system and got the lights and microphones back on. The gallery cheered. C-SPAN ceased coverage. More Republicans came to the floor. Pelosi then ordered the Capitol Police to remove the people from the gallery, so Rep Roy Blunt (R-MO) went to the gallery to speak with people first hand, delaying the action.

GOP staffers began filling the seats to witness the events and Congressmen began inviting citizens to sit in the legislative area.

Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (R-MI) proclaimed “This is the people’s House, this is not Pelosi’s politiburo.”

Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) went to the Democrat’s side of the building to list off all of the GOP bills the Dems have killed in this Congress. He then held up a sign with a picture of a VW Bug with a sail attached to it and paraded around the House, proclaiming to be a Democrat solving our energy crisis. The crowd cheered even more.

This is exactly the type of thing the GOP needs to do. It needs to show the people exactly why the Democrats have failed them, to remind them that their Congresscritter is playing politics with our national security to try to keep Obama from having to take an unpopular stand. The only thing missing is a new Contract with America to expressly outline how the GOP will solve the problems and that the GOP learned the lesson sent to them two years ago.

Congrats Mr. Boehner… it looks like you’ve regrown the spine that the GOP lost when Newt retired.

    updates:

4:27pm: Pelosi has ordered the chamber to be closed at 4:30pm (right about now).

Fox just carried some live cell phone camera footage, showing the spectacle is still ongoing.

Bush should order a special session of Congress

    4:35 pm:
The GOP is now in the press area outside the chamber holding a formal news conference demanding a vote and saying they refuse to give up regardless of how Pelosi tries to shut them down.

The gallery has been closed, so the GOP is now inviting everyone down onto the House floor to continue witnessing the event.

Great quote seeing she is a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.

What a shame that Nazi Pelosi has control of the cameras. This was a great story but as far as the MSM was concerned it was a non-story.

Washington, Aug 3 – House Republicans will be back on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives again Monday to continue the unprecedented protest that began last Friday, when dozens of Republicans joined hundreds of American citizens on the House floor to protest Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) decision to send Congress home for the rest of the summer without a vote on legislation to lower gas prices and move America toward energy independence.

In an urgent memo sent to GOP Members and staff Saturday (“A Call to Action on American Energy”), Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) and Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) hailed Friday’s action, which was led by Reps. Mike Pence (R-IN), Lynn Westmoreland (R-GA), Tom Price (R-GA), and others, and encouraged House Republicans to return to the Capitol beginning Monday morning to help keep the historic effort going.

“It’s not a request we make lightly. But the American people are suffering,” Boehner and Blunt said in the memo. “The consequences of continued congressional inaction on gas prices are unacceptable. We’ve called on the Speaker to call Congress back into an emergency session this month and schedule a vote on the American Energy Act. We must continue to make a stand until the Speaker complies.”

“We realize not everyone can be in Washington next week. But if you can be, we ask that you come to the Capitol, join our colleagues, and lend your voice, beginning this Monday at 10:00 am,” the GOP leaders wrote. “If you can’t be in Washington, we ask that you contribute to the cause in other ways – such as spreading the word among your constituents, writing an op-ed for your local newspaper, or taking our ‘all of the above’ energy message to your local airwaves.”

“Republicans stand with the American people. We share their passion and determination for energy independence, and we’ve pledged to fight boldly until Congress heeds their will,” Boehner and Blunt concluded.
