I’ve been thinking alot about Ricky Bryant Jr., the Gates-Chili graduate who was shot and killed, along with his partner, Eric Barker, down in DeKalb County, Georgia. Two women are now widowed and eight children have lost their fathers. Here’s a wonderful photo and poem from One Latina’s Blog:

Police Salute

In the simple performance of duty…

he pinned on a badge,
checked his gear with a practiced eye,
and kissed his loved ones good-bye.

In the simple performance of duty,
he reported for work,
joked with his buddies at roll call,
and made his last trip down the squadroom hall.

In the simple performance of duty,
he answered the call
to help the helpless, to find the lost,
no matter the danger or how great the cost.

In the simple performance of duty,
he lay down his life,
for those in peril he tried to save,
our brave friend went to his grave.

In the simple performance of duty,
we honor his deed,
as we carry him to rest in a flag-draped casket,
long after the world has forgotten, we shall never forget.

Never judge or regret, what he did, In the simple performance of duty.

Rest in peace our brothers, you will always be remembered.

Ricky Bryant leaves behind his wife, Letoya and his kids Kami, 2, Jaden, 6, and Kashell, 10, in Georgia. His 8-year-old daughter still lives in Rochester. Her name is Justice. Eric Barker leaves behind his wife, Yolanda and his kids, 11-year old Precious, 5-year old Jaden, 3-year old Christion and 2-year old Eric Jr.

Ricky was honored last evening when his body was escorted from the airport to the funeral home in Gates. Several area police and fire departments and citizens, lined the route.

This is so sad…

The people who do this deserve a fair trial… and then they deserve to either spend the rest of their lives in prison or face old sparky.

I’m pretty sure that in Georgia, a person can get the death penalty for killing a police officer. Although “old sparky” has been used in Georgia in the past, it’s not used anymore.

The guys who’ve been caught as suspects are, William Maurice Woodard, 26, Mario O’Brian Westbrook, 31 and Herbie DeShawn Durham, 32. They ambushed Ricky Bryant Jr. and Eric Barker at an apartment complex where Ricky and Eric worked part-time as security officers. Ricky is a former Marine who served in Afghanistan. Lonsberry has a good commentary on him:

Ricky Bryant’s NFL Superbowl Championship ring wAs featured on a recent episode of Pawn Stars when an accountant/ broker brought it in to the Las Vegas pawn shop claiming that Ricky brought it to him as collateral. This ring should be returned to Rick’s family.
