In an effort to revive the inglorious past of their 60′s predecessors, the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) held a “peace” rally and march on Wednesday, October 7, 2009, the 8th anniversary of the start of the War in Afghanistan. They met at Washington Square Park and held a rally there. The young man speaking was as anti-military as they come and railed against recruiters especially. I wonder if this young man ever uttered the phrase “I support the troops, but not the mission”? His screed against American “imperialism” (sounded like Mao!) and our military is on the video that will probably have a long life online.
The 100 or so SDS protestors then took to the streets and marched up Clinton Ave. and then west on Main St. They were trying to get to the Federal Building, but the problem was, they didn’t have a permit. They blew the permit requirement off in a deliberate act of civil disobedience and thought it their right to clog up two lanes of traffic on Main St. at rush hour (their march started at 5:30pm).
Things started going wrong at Main and Clinton, when an RFD firetruck that was on a call, was obstructed by the SDS marchers, who were apparently scuffling with an RPD officer. Here’s RFD Lt. Joseph Luna’s eye witness account of what he saw from the firetruck:
“We came to a complete stop because we noticed that group was pushing a police officer into our path using a large wooden banner,” Luna told police. He said several people moved aside when firefighters repeatedly blew the engine’s horn, “but the majority of the group stayed in the roadway, still blocking the road and struggling with the officer.”
So, according to Lt. Luna, the SDS protesters were pushing past the RPD officer, which pushed the officer into the path of the firetruck and although some protesters made an effort to get out of the way of the firetruck, the majority didn’t move and stayed in the street.
At this time, I’m posting the video that was taken by the protesters and let you be the judge on the incident:
The video doesn’t catch the SDS protesters pushing by the RPD officer at Main and Clinton, but it does show them pushing past RPD cruisers at the Main St. Bridge and that’s when the shit hit the fan. It’s appearing that besides marching in the street without a permit, there were other things that happened that the protesters and Indymedia (who also reported on this) are not forthcoming about. In the video, when the RPD cruiser pulled in front of and stopped in an obvious attempt to stop or route the protestors out of the street and onto the sidewalk, the protesters just kept on going and ignored RPD directives. I even heard an RPD officer asking them to “please” move on and disperse.
What were the SDS protesters thinking??? Pushing by the cops during the course of an illegal street parade during rush hour in Downtown Rochester is a sure way of provoking a strong response by the RPD. The police had no choice but to protect public safety by dispersing the SDS marchers, in the course of which, 12 people were arrested and one ended up in the hospital. The SDS and Indymedia are crying police brutality, playing the victim card when it was the SDS that brazenly broke the law and provoked the RPD.
It’s time the SDS protesters realized that the freedoms that are our rights as citizens of Our Great Country, are balanced by a responsibility to exercise those freedoms in a manner that won’t infringe on the rights and freedoms of our fellow citizens.
While watching the news last evening, I took note of the commentary of one of the protesters, an older guy who plainly stated that the march by the SDS was a deliberate act of civil disobedience. When you deliberately break the law, you’re taking your chances that it may invoke a response from law enforcement. Things went wrong during the march and public safety was put in jeopardy by this deliberate act.
This illegal street march by the SDS was also a typical display of leftist elitism. The SDS felt the need to push their trip on the rest of the thousands of citizens who were in Downtown Rochester, clogging up Clinton Ave. and Main St. during rush hour, when they were just trying to get home to be with their families. The rights of the 100 SDS people do not trump the rights thousands of other citizens that were Downtown at the time.
In a typical display of victim mentality, Indymedia and the SDS are attempting to portray this as a police brutality incident. In reality, the protesters of this SDS action created a dangerous situation for all who happened to be Downtown on Wednesday (10/7/2009), rudely and selfishly infringing on the rights of Downtown workers and endangering public safety. The RPD had no choice but to head them off.
The protestors were not heroic, they were reckless and foolish.
All they did was piss off their fellow citizens and make enemies. This is the same old tired act they’ve been pulling since the 60′s.

Hey, at least they stand for SOMETHING, albeit oppression, Sharia Law, etc.

HowardRoarke,
I created this post using comments that I left on Indymedia, the blog that originally posted the video and the report with the bogus “police brutality” angle and also from comments left on the Dark Cide.
The left has been pulling shit like this since the 60′s. How about the SDS sponsored “Days of Rage” in Chicago, that started on Wednesday, October 8, 1969 and lasted 3 days:
They break the law, provoke law enforcement into a confrontation then play the “police brutality” victim card. What happened this past Wednesday, 9/7/2009, was nothing new, only a tired old attempt at reliving the 60′s.

I guess they misread the Bill of Rights where it says the right to “… peacefully assemble …” – Blocking public streets and pushing police officers into the path of a firetruck on a call, is not “peaceful”.
These idiots are as “Democratic” as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

No doubt the 60′s “radicals” were into inciting violence if for no other reason than to, uh, incite violence. I’ve read where your typical “protester”, from back then, had no clue what they were protesting about or against. The “Dont’s trust anyone over 30 crowd” are in middle age, now, and quite frankly as a 35 yr. old I don’t trust a lot of THEM.
I like the stupid chant in this video. It should be “This is what $40K/yr. at the UofR bought for my parents”.
In so far as the RCSD lifting any kind of ban on recruiters or whetever I’ll go back to my argument that a kid from the streets of Rochester is safer in the armed forces than they
are on, say, Jefferson Ave. These “war protest” kids are most likely from affluent backgrounds, not the city or inner-ring ‘burbs of any city.
The ignorance I’ve seen within the campus rag sheets around Rochester would make any rational person cringe. Lies, half truths, etc., are what pass for “campus journalism”, these days, and it’s all regurgitated and parroted pap.

Police brutality? I wish those cops had been in full riot gear, billy clubs a swingin’ at these “peace protesters”.
Wait ’til “mommy or daddy of America” writes into the D&C about why their precious kid got “beat up” in the city.

Before our first rally when the Accidental Governor was in town, I went to check on a permit. The person there told me that there wasn’t enough time to process the permit. AND SHE SAID, “We can not tell you that you can not Assemble, that is your right. What we will ask is that you call this number and notify RPD of your intentions for traffic issues.” Fair Enough!
I would love to see the following. The little maggot gets in the way of the fire truck. The FD has to wait for the little Pampered Prince/Princess to get out of the way.
The spoiled little POS gets home to a pile of cinders!
OR
the person waiting for the emergency response sues these moronic barbarians for the consequences of delaying an emergency response!

As Ayn Rand noted in “Philosophy: Who Needs It”, the “radicals” (initially at Berkeley and Columbia), were really rebels hell bent on taking over their own campuses, the board of trustees and the administration be damned. Many within the faculty in those places were already brainwashed, and helped to get the rebels fired up about, well, absolutely nothing, other than perhaps letting the inmates take over the asylum. They are the ones who are now senior faculty at these institutions of higher learning. It’s all about control, and “me”-ism.
It’s this outright disrespect of authority and hierarchy of American institutions which has resulted in lots of misguided youth running around, aimlessly (led by their public school and post-secondary handlers) and thus are authorities on absolutely nothing, and have nothing of any substance to say or write. Like these protesters in downtown Rochester, they don’t have a leg to stand on, just emotion and rhetoric.
Come to think of it, when we went into Afghanistan it’s conceivable some in that “protest” were still in grade school.

“I’ve read where your typical “protester”, from back then, had no clue what they were protesting about or against. ”
Just like the teabaggers. You have obviously never seen the videos of the teabaggers protesting “socialism” etc who when asked don’t even know what socialism is or what it means. Or the videos of people who say they are protesting Obama’s policies and when asked what policies they have no idea. And it goes on and on.
Like that right?

Most regular folks who work in the background and aren’t used to doing a TV interview, don’t know how to handle it. I’ve watched the video that you’re referring to and here’s a video that turns the table on Obama supporters in the same manner:

“I’ve watched the video that you’re referring to”
VIDEOS (plural)
There are several. All displaying shocking levels of ignorance and revealing the protesters for what they are, which is being against Obama to be against Obama not because of anything he has actually proposed. Like future president Rep. Alan Grayson pointed out recently…
“They understand if Barack Obama were somehow able to cure hunger in the world, the Republicans would blame him for over-population.
They understand that if Barack Obama could somehow bring about world peace, they’d blame him for destroying the defense industry.
In fact they understand that if Barack Obama has a BLT sandwich tomorrow for lunch, they will try to ban bacon.”

and your point being??? oh yeah, all conservatives are ignorant…
R U Serious, there’s several videos painting Obama supporters as being ignorant as well, just as the videos that you tout.
They understand that if Barack Obama could somehow bring about world peace, they’d blame him for destroying the defense industry.
Where are you getting this shit from, Democratic Underground?
Obama is going to bring about world peace through the strength of his telepromptory and his vast community organizer experience, and the despots of the world will bow down and lay down their arms???
Do you really believe in that line of shit?

A firm hand salute to the Rachacha PD for exhibiting a level of professionalism and restraint I doubt I could have achieved under the same circumstances. I see our old friends from VFP were mentoring the young radicals.
Where were IVAW nd VVAW? Incognito?

Attacking cops, blocking the streets, well they did get on TV, their 15 minutes of fame. Of course this will follow them forever, they need to get their names posted under this video so their future employers know what they are getting.
Whiney little babies surrounded by their children, who are being taught to hate America.

The “argument” that “teabaggers”, or whatever colloquialism fits the lefty crybaby agenda, don’t know what they’re protesting about is hogwash.
Where’s the proof? This is the same, parroted garbage regurgitated on Lefty blogs, the comments on the D&C website, etc., the list goes on.
Oh, that’s right, Rachel Mad Cow said it. Keith Olbermann (windbag) said it. Washed up cryababies like Janeane Garofolo said it.
How does that saying go? Oh, just keep saying the same lie, over and over again, and people will believe it.
Lefties are beside themselves they voted in a buffoon in Obama, so they’re covering their asses by now by making “the personal political”, and maligning those who are resisting the march towards Euro-trash socialism. We’ve had socialism in this country since the late 19th C., but the ball REALLY got rolling in the 30′s, 50′s, and 60′s.
Socialism is on the retreat in Europe, heck, I’d take French President Sarkozy over this clown we have in office right now. Sarkozy is Hungarian, BTW>
15 phantomlord // Oct 9, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Having attended three tea parties in Rochester, I’d say the vast majority of people knew exactly what they were there for. As for your continued use of the term “teabaggers,” what are you, 12? haha! someone made a sex joke! haha! I think by even 15 that pun would be lame.
And yeah, if you want to play the ignorant protesters game, I’ve got several videos from protests back in 2003 with that whole BusHitler thing and people who couldn’t even say why they showed up to the protests, must less articulate any real alternative policies.

The SDS (along with the Weather Underground and other groups) was a poisonous, lying organization that had ties to the North Vietnamese Communists and Castro. I can see their members haven’t changed much. They are still criminals and traitors to this country.
I wonder who’s house burnt down while they were blocking a firetruck? What a bunch of worthless morons.

“Where are you getting this shit from, Democratic Underground?”
As I noted in my post, it is from Rep. Alan Grayson speaking last week. I posted his whole speech here. http://www.rochesterconservative.com/blog/who-has-the-nasty-rhetoric-on-health-care-again/#more-3243
“Obama is going to bring about world peace through the strength of his telepromptory and his vast community organizer experience, and the despots of the world will bow down and lay down their arms??? ”
Actually I think what he was trying to do was make a point about the amount of ODS there is out theer on the right by saying that even IF Obama did bring about world peace they would still find something to complain about.
19 rochester_veteran // Oct 11, 2009 at 10:31 am
ODS?
Can’t you come up with something more original than that?
There’s an old saying, “people who live in glass houses, shouldn’t throw stones”. After the left’s all out assault on W during his terms, you all had best grow some thicker skin. It’s already a known fact that Obama can’t handle criticism, as he’s been treated as the “golden boy” for most of his life. The thing is, Obama lashes out at his critics, whereas W let that stuff slide and kept on resolutely doing his job. Our troops loved and respected W, but the verdict is out on their new CIC, as he never served and is clearly uncomfortable rubbing elbows with the troops. Obama’s only met face-to-face with his Commander in Afghanistan, Lt. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, twice and only gave him a scant 20 minutes during their latest meeting, while Obam was on his debacle of a trip to Copenhagen. Obama gave more time acting as a salesman, pitching the Olympics for his Chicago cronies, than he did discussing the War in Afghanistan and his Commanding General!
We’re getting off topic though and I want to steer these commentaries towards the subject of this blog topic. If you compare the Tax Day Rochester Tea Party with the SDS “who owns the streets” Disrupting Downtown Parade, it’s like day and night.
The Tax Day Rochester Tea Party was planned in advance to be a peaceful and lawful rally and march. We procured the proper permit from the City and worked with the RPD and City to insure a peaceful and lawful event. 1500 people loudly rallied and marched and it turned into an historic event that uplifted the Tea Party movement in Rochester.
The SDS sought to break the law and marched in the streets of Downtown without a permit or prior arrangements with the RPD and the City, in a deliberate act of civil disobedience. They sought to defy the authorities. The SDS’ actions clogged traffic at rush hour, endangered the public safety of others who were Downtown at the time, impeded an emergency vehicle that was on a call, pushed an RPD officer into the path of said emergency vehicle, pushed by RPD officers and ignored directives to stop and disperse, and now they’re crying “police brutality”???
Give me a break!
Like I said, day and night. Who acted like responsible citizens and who acted like spoiled brats?
