Veterans Outreach Center, Help for Veterans in Need

This past Sunday, November 11, was Veterans Day. On Monday, November 12, there were several articles circulating in newspapers (When Johnny comes home…less from the Boston Globe and Honor those who served from the Democrat and Chronicle) about the plight of homeless veterans. As a fellow veteran, I feel it’s my duty to my brother and sister veterans who are in need of help, to point the way to a place they will get the assistance they need.

We are very fortunate in Rochester to have the Veterans Outreach Center. It was established in 1973 to help Vietnam veterans cope with their wartime experiences and to facilitate their government benefits claims.

The Veterans Outreach Center sponsors quite a few programs:

Counseling and Case Management

Veterans Alternative To Incarceration Program (VATIP)

Richards House and Supportive Living

Employment and Training

Veterans Community Technology Center

Quartermaster’s Club

Job Fairs and Stand Downs

I’m a member of Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 20. There’s alot of support services that Chapter 20 supports for veterans including:

Veterans Emergency Relief Foundation (VERF)

Rochester Vet Center Program

Unity Health Diabetes

Rochester Day Treatment

CFIDS

Operation Welcome Home (partnered with the VOC)

Our community has numerous services that are available for the homeless. Help is out there for homeless Veterans. The first step a homeless Veteran needs to do is help themselves by getting down to:

Veterans Outreach Center
459 South Ave.
Rochester, NY 14620
(585) 546-1081, or Toll-Free 866-906-VETS (8387)
email info@veteransoutreachcenter.org

and ask for help, because help is there and they’ll get it. If you know of a Veteran in need, offer to drive them down to the Veterans Outreach Center and help them get started in the process. Rochester is a very caring community and always rated as one of the top cities in the US when it comes to giving.

There are many programs for our veterans, thank you rochester veteran for pointing them out.

Many veterans choose not to seek out these programs. Due to mental illness, alcoholism or drug addiction. Unfortunately you can’t make them get the help they need so much.

    John,

I just got off the phone with the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. They told me that you should call them at their toll free number:
