Mark Steyn had an excellent commentary in the Washington Times this past Friday (2/26/2009) comparing the tenuous situation in Greece, where they’re on the verge of defaulting on their loans and going bankrupt, and the situation here in the US. We could end up in the same boat unless we get our entitlement situation under control.
From Mark Steyn: Our Own Greek Tragedy:
While President Obama was making his latest pitch for a brand new, even more unsustainable entitlement at the health care “summit,” thousands of Greeks took to the streets to riot. An enterprising cable network might have shown the two scenes on a continuous split screen – because they’re part of the same story. It’s just that Greece is a little further along in the plot: They’re at the point where the canoe is about to plunge over the falls. America is further upstream and can still pull for shore, but has decided instead that what it needs to do is catch up with the Greek canoe. Chapter One (the introduction of unsustainable entitlements) leads eventually to Chapter 20 (total societal collapse): The Greeks are at Chapter 17 or 18.
While Obama is attempting to shove Obamacare down our throats and nationalize 1/6 of the economy, the country of Greece has gone down that path already and is on the verge of collapse because of socialistic policies that are similar to what Obama seeks to implement.
Medicare will reach insolvency by 2017. Social Security isn’t much better off and will reach insolvency by 2037. With two major socialized health and retirement plans tanking on the horizon, why is Obama so intent to add yet another entitlement program that’s been estimated to cost US taxpayers $6 trillion!
Rather than adding new socialist programs that are going to eventually wreck our economy, we should be either cutting programs or figure out ways to pay for what we currently have without bankrupting future generations. As Mark Steyn wrote in his excellent commentary, the US will be in the same boat as Greece if we don’t stop adding new entitlement programs!
